Shirley Brooks

The 2013 U. S. Small Business Administration Financial Services Champion of the Year, Shirley Brooks, is President at Liquid Capital Alternatives a Texas based alternative lender specializing in Accounts Receivable Financing, Asset Based Lending (ABL), and Purchase Ordering Financing.

Shirley’s professional resume includes over 20 years of intensive underwriting training in the alternative finance industry including 13 years in microfinance, professional experience in executive management, training, organizational development, leadership  and business development. Shirley’s passion is ensuring a path toward growth for small businesses by assisting owners in financial education and accessing capital. Her passion has created a platform to serve as a Subject Matter Expert in making the unbanked, bankable.

Shirley recently served as AIM Global Financial LLC’s Manager of Market Development & Sales Division, a Texas Based specialty commercial finance division that offers Accounts Receivable Financing.   AIM Global Financial partners with Gulf Coast Business Credit (GCBC), the working capital finance division of Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company. GCBC is ranked amongst the top 20 largest factoring firms in the United States.

Shirley Brooks served the Women Business Enterprise community for over 2 years as the Director of U.S. Small Business Administration WBEA – Houston Women’s Business Center (WBC).  The host agency WBEA, WBC is a 501 ( c ) (3) non-profit organization providing women’s business enterprises with one-on-one counseling to grow scalable  businesses and create job growth.  The WBC provides business training, counseling, coaching, mentoring and other assistance geared toward women.  They served over a 1000 women in 2015. The Center offered pre-certification review for WBE’s WBENC.  The WBC program is recognized as part of a network of over 106 centers throughout the U.S.  Shirley’s focus was specializing in meeting the needs of women entrepreneurs and providing one-on-one business coaching and training to over a 1000 clients per grant year.  The Center was funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement by the U.S. Small Business Administration.  SBA Women’s Business Center helped woman turn their inspiration into action.

Shirley found her purpose as she served over 13 plus years’ with ACCION Texas, “LiftFund” as Vice President  Southeast Division. She provided thousands of loans helping unbanked small businesses gain access to operating capital through microfinance to grow their business and create jobs. Shirley believes small business can’t grow without accesses to operational capital and more importantly the proper understanding of how and when to utilize alternative financing, Micro Loans, Accounts Receivable Financing, Factoring, Asset Based Lending, Equipment Leasing, Purchase Order Financing, and SBA  504 Loans. Educating the Small Business Community has and will always be a passion for her.

With focus and determination Shirley has established a true customer following over the past fifteen years, with a presence in the Houston business community through collaborations with community partners including the banking industry.  She is known as a Subject Matter Expert in alternative financing.  Shirley is proud of her native Houstonian legacy (Go Cougars) and her business studies at University of Houston.  Shirley is also the proud mother of a lovely daughter.

As the President of Liquid Capital Access, Iris Welch is dedicated to providing access to capital for business owners through alternative funding products such as Factoring, Purchase Order Funding, PO Financing and other funding options. As a native Texan and graduate of the University of Houston, Iris has over 31 years of experience in the banking and finance industry, compliance, small business lending and as Vice President of Small Business and Alternative Funding.

Iris has worked with many businesses to achieve success through financial stability. This vast experience has made the transition concentrating on alternative funding a continuance of her work and dedication to assisting businesses in achieving long-term financial business success.

Iris has consulted with start-ups and seasoned business owners on everything from “What’s in a Name”, “Who / What is your Target Market” ,” Do you have a Brand?” to just plain old business etiquette’s. Iris has been a business owner for many years and a published author and speaker.Her book “Pocket Money Books Presents How To Get Your Business Funded” speaks from her experience and proven methods.

Robert Thompson-So

As Liquid Capital’s Chief Strategy Officer since 2013, Robert fills a major organizational role, working within the executive team and with the board of directors to help identify, plan and execute strategic initiatives across various lines of business. These may include capitalization, marketing/sales, structuring, developing new markets, M&A initiatives and more. In the financial services industry since 1992, Robert brings to Liquid Capital a background in capital markets, restructuring, mergers/acquisitions, and investment advisory—all areas that contributed to his interest in alternative investment and financing. As active as his job is, Robert is also driven to stay active in his spare time, working out, playing volleyball and rock climbing.

Doug Shaffer runs Liquid Capital Business Funding, located in the Houston metro area, Texas, which works with small and mid-sized businesses to help them access the working capital they need to grow.

With a BS in Chemistry from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina and 45 years of experience successfully operating and growing businesses across diverse fields such as high-tech manufacturing, business to business service, and healthcare, Doug has a thorough understanding of what businesses need to be successful. He has created a number of companies with payrolls well in excess of $2 million, and now uses this expertise and knowledge to help small businesses grow by providing realistic, straight-forward solutions, consultation, and working capital when traditional lenders cannot.

Passionate, caring, and focused, Doug is enthusiastic about helping small businesses. He recently worked with a startup that had high growth-rate potential, but no access to working capital. By freeing up the company’s profits that were tied in A/R, he was able to give the business the money it needed to grow within 10 days.

Doug is a member of the Pasadena, TX Chamber of Commerce, the TMA Houston, and the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region. Doug supports numerous missions and community outreach programs through volunteering and fundraising, and likes to spend his leisure time sailboat racing and fly fishing.

Ron Edinger earned an MBA and a Master’s degree in Economics from Columbia University. He began his career at McKinsey & Company, developing financial strategies for Fortune 500 clients. Ron has held top management positions in biotechnology and high technology companies in Silicon Valley, where he raised over $600mm in public offerings and venture capital. As CFO of one of the first biotech companies, Ron led the team that oversaw what was, at the time, the largest initial public offering in the history of the stock market. Ron started one of the first asset-based lending companies in Central America, and in his over 40 years in business has also owned and operated small businesses.
