I think most business owners recognize that one of their key goals is to have a pile of money, though it could be defined as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enough food for the table next month<\/li>\n<li>A sweet retirement<\/li>\n<li>A solvent and growing business to hand to a child<\/li>\n<li>A desirable business that sells for a good earnings multiple<\/li>\n<li>Enough working capital to allow the growth that they know and see is possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, most business owners focus on getting the sale: \u201cA PO should be here soon\u201d, \u201cWe signed the contract!\u201d, etc. There often isn\u2019t enough focus on whether that \u201csale\u201d ever turns into cash.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes there\u2019s the \u201cdeer in the headlights\u201d from \u201chow on earth do we now provision that big sale?\u201d, but I often come across businesses giving trade credit to a customer in quantities far beyond what is prudent based on professional credit adjudication. If it becomes a bad debt, then all you have left are a bunch of costs.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on profit margins, it could take $2M in sales to make up for a $200K bad debt.
