Gratitude matters when running a business, both for your mental health and for the health of your organization.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Gratitude-leads-to-business-success\"<\/p>\n

In late 2019, people sat down to make their New Years\u2019 resolutions for the coming year. Many decided to be more grateful in their daily life.<\/p>\n

On the resolutions lists for 2020,\u00a0some suggested<\/a>\u00a0to \u201crepeat an affirmation related to gratitude in the morning\u201d or to simply \u201clook on the bright side<\/a>\u201d \u2014 or the very\u00a0vague suggestion<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cbe good, be kind, be better.\u201d While relatively simple to execute in theory, could it really be that simple in reality?<\/p>\n

Little did anyone know how the world would soon be disrupted by the looming coronavirus pandemic\u2014making gratitude more important, and even surprisingly more challenging, than ever before.<\/p>\n

The wisdom of being grateful<\/h2>\n

You may be surprised that insights from ancient Greek thinkers could resonate with modern CEOs and business leaders, but the importance of gratitude is timeless.<\/p>\n

The Greek philosopher Epictetus\u00a0tells us<\/a>, \u201cHe is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.\u201d Of course, Epictetus must have meant \u201cwise human,\u201d as\u00a036% of US businesses<\/a>\u00a0are women-owned!<\/p>\n

Modern psychology research supports these insights, too. In\u00a0studies at leading universities<\/a>, participants who focused on gratitude felt more optimistic about their lives and even visited the doctor less frequently.<\/p>\n

Gratitude forces us to think about the \u201cnow\u201d instead of the past and future. This means our minds become free to focus on what we can control, instead of lingering on regret or anxiety.<\/p>\n

Sigh\u2026 Why do we focus on the negative?<\/h2>\n

Wanting to be grateful is easy, but remembering to be grateful is hard. When business and life get chaotic, counting your blessings is probably the last thing on your to-do list.<\/p>\n

The human brain tends to focus on the negative. One example of this is \u201closs aversion theory,\u201d or the idea that people care more about losses than wins.\u00a0Experiments have shown<\/a>\u00a0that people get more upset about losing something than gaining something new.<\/p>\n

The key to gratitude is overcoming the natural \u201csurvival instinct\u201d that causes us to fear failure and instead learn to think slowly and deliberately.<\/p>\n

Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman\u00a0describes two psychological systems<\/a>\u00a0in his book,\u00a0Thinking Fast and Slow<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cSystem 1\u201d is our unconscious survival mode, while \u201cSystem 2\u201d is analytical, reasoned thinking.<\/p>\n

Business leaders know the importance of\u00a0having a strategic mindset<\/a>\u2014in fact, long-term planning is key to being an entrepreneur. When facing problems in your business, leaning into gratitude and \u201cSystem 2\u201d thinking can help you make the right decisions in the long term, rather than succumbing to fear and negativity.<\/p>\n

Try these easy gratitude exercises<\/h2>\n

So, how can you remind yourself to be more grateful on a daily basis?<\/p>\n

One way is by\u00a0starting a gratitude journal<\/a>. This doesn\u2019t have to be complicated\u2014it\u2019s enough to just get a notebook and jot down two to three things you\u2019re grateful for each day. Don\u2019t worry about repeating things or using perfect spelling.<\/p>\n

You could also incorporate more reflection time into your daily routine. This could mean taking 10 minutes to meditate in the morning or taking a short walk at lunchtime.<\/p>\n

The most important thing is to be consistent and make sure the new changes stick.<\/p>\n

Becoming a grateful leader<\/h2>\n

Learning to be more grateful isn\u2019t just helpful in your own life. It can also help you inspire others in your company.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Academy of Management Insights<\/a>, creating a positive \u201cculture of gratitude\u201d in your business can help reduce turnover and improve employee morale. There are other business benefits, too. A report from the\u00a0Global Happiness Council<\/a>\u00a0tells us \u201ca meaningful increase in well-being\u201d yields on average a 10% increase in productivity.<\/p>\n

Business leaders and entrepreneurs can encourage gratitude in a variety of ways. Forbes contributor Karlyn Borysenko has\u00a0shared some stories<\/a>\u00a0of how small business owners have built a culture of gratitude including Indira Hodzic, owner of\u00a0IMAGE MedSpa<\/a>, who makes a point to share positive affirmations and quotes with her employees. Likewise, human resources consultant\u00a0Rebecca Mazin<\/a>\u00a0encourages clients to write notes thanking employees for specific actions.<\/p>\n

Gratitude means appreciating everyone\u2019s contribution, celebrating even the small wins, and giving praise where it is due. It also means giving suppliers, colleagues and customers the benefit of the doubt\u2014even when the going gets tough.<\/p>\n
